Creada en 1998por Jared Leto (guitarra y voz), y su hermano Shannon (batería), "30 Seconds to Mars" comenzó como un pequeño proyecto familiar. Las cosas empezaron a funcionar con cierta rapidez y pronto Matt Wachter se unió a la banda como bajista, al igual que Solon Bixler (guitarra) y Kevin Drake (guitarra) harían, aunque la permanencia de éste último sería bastante menor. También ha sido objeto de críticas de que la banda es del estilo emo, pero sus integrantes han declarado que únicamente tocan rock alternativo, y han negado ese genero.
